“Aradi Kamaraszínház” Theater - “Szegedi Pinceszínház” Theater

We would look in vain for certain moments of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus in the biographies of Mozart or Salieri. Shaffer was not so much interested in historical fidelity, but a much more general and timeless question: what is the divine talent, and why do we destroy the one to whom this talent is given? In Amadeus, Salieri is a successful court composer, Mozart's contemporary and rival. Influential, rich, intelligent, but mediocre compared to Mozart. The play is a tension between pettiness and generosity, fear and courage, mediocrity and excellence, and an explanation of why evil triumphs in us and in the world most of the time.

Yet this mediocre man is the only one sensitive enough to understand Mozart's genius. He understands, but he cannot bear it because he lacks the human greatness necessary to accept his own limitations. Amadeus contrasts the diabolical and divine traits of artistic talent, and in doing so articulates something very important about the inner struggle in all of us.

The play is a tension between pettiness and generosity, fear and courage, mediocrity and excellence, and an explanation of why most of the time evil triumphs in us and in the world.

Salieri's increasingly determined campaign of revenge against Mozart is the theme of the play, and the formation of the legend through which the mediocre composer became immortal, that is, that he, Salieri, killed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart…
