It is the end of 2019. We was trying to bring to life the Tragedy of Imre Madách in the Hungarian State Theatre of Timișoara, under the direction of director Silviu Purcărete. I mean the Man’s Tragedy, not Madách’s.
During rehearsal breaks, or when I wasn't on stage, I was scribbling pencil sketches in my copy of the play. I had no serious intention with the drawings - for a while. After a while, however, I became more and more interested in what appeared on paper as a result of the graphite. Then came the premiere - and right after came the pandemic and the quarantine of the whole country because of the “Lucifer-descendant”, the Covid19. Quarantine of the whole world, in fact.
Well, it was under these circumstances that this series of forty prints in graphite, ink and acrylic on A4 paper was created. These prints were scanned, enlarged to 50×70 cm and then printed as posters. These posters form the material of the exhibition. The original is an absolutely unique specimen: it is the only theatrical copy of The Tragedy of Man in this form in the world. (Mátyás Zsolt Imre)
